"Even though many ethnomusicologists have considered their work to be outside the music industry, ethnographic recordings they produce have been shaped by the dictates of technology and marketing in the same ways as popular music. This paper investigates the legal, echnological, and marketing considerations that shaped the ethnographic recordings of the 1950s—especially those of  Alan Lomax and Moses Asch--and how recordings continue to be shaped today on the
Internet".
